The Backstory
More than an earthquake rocked 2018, read how a woman contacted the Anchorage Police Department to tell them about a video depicting a sexual assault on an unresponsive woman.
Anchorage Police knew about a man who preyed on the most marginalized.
POLICE WERE TOLD OF MURDER AND DID NOT INVESTIGATE
There were two heroic women that defied the odds and reported him, one a full year before he tortured and murdered Kathleen Jo Henry.
There was no follow up on a series of calls and complaints regarding Smith’s suspicious activities before the murder of Kathleen Jo Henry. The calls from Alicia Youngblood in August 2018 were dismissed, signaling a disturbing disregard for the safety of the Anchorage community.

The handling of the Brian Steven Smith case has raised deep systemic concerns, with local media remaining largely silent after the trial was over.
One such example is the role of phone records between Smith and Ian Calhoun, a critical piece of evidence that was used in Smith’s trial.
These records revealed that Calhoun had knowledge of Smith’s criminal activities, including his interaction with the body of Kathleen Jo Henry. Court documents show Calhoun warned Smith when Henry’s body was found, to which Smith callously responded, “oops.”
Failure to prosecute Calhoun as an accomplice has fallen on deaf ears, perhaps due to cronyism. Calhoun’s parents are long time employees of the Municipality of Anchorage, and his father in law is the President of a group of construction companies in the state of Alaska. This equals power.
It all began with one goal: Arrest Ian Calhoun. But we have learned so much more.
But, how could we find out the information? Records requests wouldn’t readily give the information, and court records didn’t list the details.
This was when it was decided; visit Smith in jail. Because of this, the information shared here has been given by Smith. After more than 20 visits, what have we learned? It has been a frustrating process, with clear goals and a debrief after each visit. Here is a video detailing a visit.
